How To Repaint and Update A Garden Workbench

Spring gardening season is just around the corner! See how we easily updated our tired, worn garden work bench in just a few hours.

We needed to repaint our 10 year-old garden work bench. We bought it locally and it fit perfect in the space we have on our small deck. I had done a light repainting a few years ago, but it really needed a full paint job. It would protect the wood and look much better! You could do this with a yard sale/thrift store bench as well. Even though I covered it with clear plastic each winter the top still took a beating. Pretty faded, scratched and worn. We decided to keep it the same color, a dark forest green.

First we emptied it out. It was a good time to sort and sift. Hubby bought some industrial spray paint thru his employer. It was really close to original paint color and only $3.00 for a large can. We used 2 cans, with some leftover. Next we moved it to the grass onto a tarp.

I sanded with a palm sander and got the top nice and smooth. Then I brushed it off with a soft bench brush. I brushed down the entire bench front and back.

Next I nailed a few loose boards down on the top and on the front of the door with a nail gun. You could use galvanized nails and a hammer if you didn't have one. Now it's ready to paint!

I also painted the shelves hubby had added for me when we bought it. We also added the hanging screws when we purchased it. I HIGHLY recommend this! We hang all our tools during gardening season, frees up space.

I did one coat of paint, waited about an hour. Next I did coat #2. Looks like brand new!!! Should be good for another 10 years.

Great use of space. Check out more photos on my blog!
