I didn’t have the money to spend $2k on one of those fancy outdoor beach beds, so I built my own!
I measured the size of a Queen size mattress and added a couple inches on each side For the size. We built the frame out of 2x12 pine. We used metal brackets to reinforce all the corners. We also put a 2x12 down the middle to make it extr durable.
I don’t have pictures of every step unfortunately. Itopped the frame with 3/4 inch plywood with deck screws. You will need a fairly powerful drill to get through the thickness of the wood. We put locking castor wheels on each corner. I wanted to be able to move and turn the bed to face the sun or move to the shade. hen I painted the frame with Exterior paint in “Caribbean Blue”. I painted a full 3 coats to make sure the wood was protected well.
For the headboard I used 1x4 fence boards and cut them to the height I wanted. I painted tge headboard with exterior white paint. I recommend sanding the fence boards before painting. The headboard was attached to the back of the frame woth deck screws. I used decorative baseboard to trim the sides and corners.
I purchased a 10 inch thick memory foam mattress woth a 4.5 star rating on Amazon for $179. I bought a waterproof mattress encasement on Amazon for $25. Figuring out how to cover the mattress was challenging at first... until I went to Home Goods. I purchased this Queen size blue quilt to cover the mattress. It is tightly held down underneath with bed sheet fasteners that basically look like suspenders from Amazon. The quilt stays nice and tight. I purchased decorative outdoor pillows. Total cost was less than $500. This bed is solid And durable. Much better quality than a store bought one!
The lumber cost $80-$85. Hardware $25. Paint $30. Mattress $179, Waterproof mattress encasement $25, quilt and pillows $80, sheet fasteners $10
A great place for a nap in the shade, sunbathing, or for sleeping on a hot summer night!

It's a great idea for outdoor napping but do you have to drag

the quilt and mattress inside in inclement weather?

I hate having to bring in the patio chair cushions,

I can't imagine having to do that with this setup,

    where would you store it???

What is the brown thing at the head of the bed? The bed is adorable!

What about putting hinges on part of the platform? That way you could store the pillows and linens inside when not in use?

Your back yard looks really nice, & what a nice "bed" to relax on!

What a lovely oasis you have created with this bed for taking a nap on a lazy afternoon. Love the colors, they speak summer and the beach. Instead of having to purchase a quilt for covering the bed, you could use a sunbrella fabric like the patio furniture makers use and there would be no worry of it getting stained or dirty. I can also envision this being made in a twin size version for a porch or a small patio area. A job well done and one to be proud of. Looks stunning. Also love the large umbrella you have behind it to give a bit of shade if needed.
