It is time for a garage makeover! The garage, the storage room of our home. It is so easy for this space to get out of control which is why I knew we needed to get organized in here and set up smart storage solutions.

Let’s take a look at how our garage started shall we.

Yikes am I right! The garage was the catch all for everything and I really wanted to transform this area into a shop area for all of our home projects. I knew I wanted to use pegboard to get things up and out of the way as well as have everything visible, so it was easy to access and see everything. You are much more likely to use something that you can see rather than having to search for it.

We decided to cover the walls with pegboard to really take advantage of the vertical space for storage. Pegboard is a great storage solution for garages and tool storage. We measured out and cut everything to fit and painted the pegboard before installing it to the wall. I choose black and I love it! What do you think? I would recommend using a paint sprayer if you have one because standard paint can get stuck in the peg holes.

Once painted, we installed the pegboard using spacers, this allows the pegboard to sit away from the wall giving you the appropriate space for the hooks to fit into. Now on to the fun stuff!

National Hardware has a bunch of hooks, bins, and accessories that work so well with common garage items. I knew I wanted as many things off the floor and assigned a home as possible. The best way to make sure that things stay organized is by assigning everything a home. The main reason we develop clutter is from unmade decisions of where things should go, so I made sure to create a place for everything so there would be no decision paralysis in the future.

We were able to repurpose the upper cabinets and base cabinet that was in here and just clean it up and add a decorative curtain to the front to hide everything inside.

Here are the steps that I followed to organize the garage:

Step 1: Purge and Edit. Go through all of your items and get rid of anything that is broken or that you no longer need.

Step 2: Categorize. Start sorting all of your items into like items so that you can see what different categories you will need to organize.

Step 3: Contain. Now that you see what you will need to store you can plan out what bins or storage solutions will work best.

Step 4: Set up a system/maintain. Set up a system through placement and labeling that will make everything easier to maintain in the future.

Now that this space is complete bring on more projects! Having an organized garage and a dedicated space for projects makes tackling projects so much easier and enjoyable.

Every garage or workshop area should have a sink. 👍️

I bet you will wonder how you ever lived without it.
