The deck on the back of the house was not much different than any you might find in a typical American backyard. A big space used for outside dining, relaxing and entertaining. Only being a foot off the ground the railing surrounding the deck wasn’t necessary. The spindles and the landscaping surrounding the deck made the area feel cramped instead of cozy. Tom had an idea. Do away with the railing in exchange for something much more open , taking advantage of the wide open backyard space. Then, give them something to look at. A fountain and streamscape that seems to flow right out from under the deck.
The way the deck looked when we arrived
Looking towards the corner where the water feature will go. Notice how the railings, when sitting, block the views of the backyard.
Matt compacts the bottom of the basin that will store all of the water for the water feature.  The backyard might as well be miles away with those railings in the way. Time for some rudimentary carpentry.
Antonio lays down the underliner in the basin for the streamscape. This layer  protects the liner from damage due to rocks lurking underneath or roots looking for water.
With the aquablox installed in the basin and the stream area underlined it’s almost time to start adding some rock work.  Notice that the railings on the deck starting to  come down.
With some rock in the feature and the fountains being dry-fitted the plumbing can be completed.  Also at this time underwater lighting is installed.  Gravel will be installed afterwards covering the lighting wires and liner.
Adding plantings, both in the landscape and into the water feature.  Picking the proper perennials to surround this water feature meant blending into the existing landscape.
The new view from the deck. Open, natural and relaxing.  Notice the spindles and railing have been replaced with a single line of heavy duty marine roping.  The corner is left open maintaining the views of the fountain and stream
Looking back at the deck from the backyard.  When entertaining these two spaces seem much more connected than separated, as they were before the renovation.
The stream gently flows from the deck.  The fountains, one small bubbling rock near the deck and one slate stacked urn on top of the basin each create their own appeal. Relaxing in the shade makes it easy to enjoy them both.
As night sets in the underwater lighting automatically turns on.  Adding underwater lighting to any feature is easy.  The ambiance created when the lights dance on the moving water can be mesmerizing.

Another look at that relaxing view.  Jealous?
