For those of you new to DIY kits, we offer different DIY with everything you need to do a specific project that you can order straight to your door. Keep reading for instructions on how to put together this fun bottle cap wind chime!

Let's get started! I’m so excited to walk you through this project and hang this up in my backyard!!

In this kit you will find Cholla wood, it’s a type of dry cactus that’s naturally full of holes, making it perfect for our project. You’ll also find vintage style bottle caps with two holes, jump rings to connect the bottle caps (or you received split rings in your box and jump rings in the mail), two pairs of needle nose pliers to open those rings, and wire.

Step 1: Decide the design

The three designs I decided between were angled, chevron or straight. One of my favorite things about this project is that because we have natural wood, and an assortment of different bottle caps even if every single person picks the same design their windchimes will turn out differently.

Step 2: Attaching the bottle caps

Once I decided on my design I began attaching the bottle caps. When opening jump rings, your first instinct might be to pull open the jump ring by pulling on the two sides. But, if you do that, the ring will remember it has been pulled open and will stay open from then on. The best way to open a jump ring is to grab as much of the side of each ring as possible and twist the sides the sides one backward and one forward, never pulling it open to the sides. If the ring keeps slipping then you need to grip your ring tighter or get a little bit more of the ring in the nose of your pliers. It might be easiest to understand opening and closing the jump ring by watching the video.

To close the jump ring you have to grab both sides in the same places that you used to open it (with less room now that two bottle caps are on it) and wiggle the sides back and forth. Never squeeze the ring close.

Step 3: Attaching the bottle caps to the wood

The cholla wood has so many holes in it I had to carefully pick which ones I would use, the options feel endless and I want to make sure my spacing works out.

I used the wire to attach each column to the wood by making a loop, tightening it and twisting the ends closed.

Step 4: Hanging the Windchime

I attached my hanging wire to the wood in pretty much the same way I would attach a hanging wire to the back of a picture frame. I slipped the end of the wire in a hole in the wood and out of a hole next to it.

Then I wrapped the end of the wire around supporting wire and back through the same holes I had just put it. Lastly, I wrapped it around the supporting wire adding extra security and finishing it off nicely. I did this on both sides of the wood.

Look how amazing it turned out, so vintage chic; and it sounds lovely too!

Unfortunately, we no longer offer this kit for purchase, but we hope you were inspired by this tutorial to build this fun bottle cap wind chime!
