This planter with trellis can be built by anyone with beginner woodworking skills in just one day. I have designed the plans so that it requires common materials and tools. You can adjust the dimensions of the planter to suit your needs.
Who said wooden planters need to be expensive? Build this great planter with trellis under 15 $. To see how you can accomplish that, take a look over the following instructions.
As you can see in the diagram, the planter with trellis features a sturdy structure.
Firstly, you need to build the four panels for the planter box. Use 1x4 cleats to lock the four 1x6 slats together. Add glue to the joints and make sure you leave no gaps between the components. Drill pilot holes and insert 1 1/4" screws through the cleats into the slats.
Clamp the 2x2 legs to the panels. Insert 2" screws through the pocket holes drilled at both ends of the cleats. Check if the corners are square before inserting the screws. Add waterproof glue to enhance the rigidity of the joints. Attach the back legs to the panel in the same manner.
Next, you need to fit the side panels to the front and back of the planter box. Clamp everything together tightly and insert 2" screws through the cleats to get the job done. Make sure the corners are square.
After assembling the components, the planter box should look like this. Attach the 1x2 trims to the top of the slats and lock them into place with finishing nails.
Now, one of the last steps of our garden project is to create the trellis for the planter box. I have used 1/2" x 1" strips of wood to create the supports. Use 1 1/4" brad nails to secure the components to the frame.
Next, attach the rest of the wood strips, as shown in the diagram. Make sure you place the components equally-spaced for symmetry. Apply waterproof stain to enhance the look of the planter with trellis and to protect the components from decay.

Or....use an old door if you can find one without the glass in it. If it has glass, Carefully remove glass (save for another project!), make your planter and attach!

Love this super sweet idea goes to show you don't have to have a big trellis to liven up certain areas in your yard!!
