Ellsworth the Eagle Goes Upscale!

This is the first of a multi-part series showing off what you can do with the Modern Masters line of reactive paints. Their website is so deep that you could get lost in it! I loved looking through their products and examples – can I quit my job now? My mind is swimming with ideas!!
My first project was to turn a chain-saw eagle into an aged bronze piece. We adopted Ellsworth at a craft show in mid-Missouri and, for the first several years, were diligent about rubbing him down with oil. As time went by, however, we became negligent and so he aged more quickly (guess it’s a little like our own skin; if we don’t moisturize, we wrinkle!).
We used Modern Masters Bronze Reactive Metallic Paint and oxidizing activator.

Clean the piece thoroughly. I brushed and vacuumed Ellsworth thoroughly (he was very grateful).

The first step in the Modern Masters process is to coat the piece with Primer. Here is Ellsworth “getting primed.” Let your piece dry thoroughly and then proceed to the next step.
The Bronze Reactive Metallic Paint comes next. We had never used reactive metallic paints before. Goes on just like regular paint. Absolutely no different. The brushes clean up with soap and water (as does your skin – I never remember to wear gloves!).
This is where the fun really begins! Apply a second coat of the reactive metallic paint and while it is still wet, apply the oxidizing activator. I applied it with both the spritzer that was supplied with the product as well as with a sea sponge and a brush. Frankly, I thought this was going to be a bust – didn’t look like any thing was happening (for about three minutes – have I mentioned that I am not always the most patient person in the world?). I have completed projects before where I applied a blue patina using a sea sponge or brush after the base coat dried but I have never just applied a clear liquid expecting any acceptable result!

Wait. Leave the project area. I went outside and spent some time enjoying the weather by cleaning up my asparagus patch and doing a bit of weeding in the strawberry bed. Give your project time to dry. Don’t peek. Just have faith that these people know what their product will do.
Voila! Ellsworth is a new man (or eagle, as it were). He is thrilled with his new look as are we. We can’t wait to put him outside and have someone ask where we picked up the aged bronze eagle statue. I did not take him to this spot for a photo shoot. He is too heavy. This is a local botanical garden - I just photoshopped him into the scene but I think he looks pretty grand sitting there! This project made me feel like a true Modern Master - these products can make you feel like one too!! You can find local dealers for Modern Masters on their website. http://www.modernmasters.com
