Last summer I took on a massive task of saving a little rustic garden shed I have out back. Leaving THIS year to decorate it up to the hilt! The very best part!

And I knew just the thing it needed...

Grabbing a few reclaimed wood planks along with a rusty rake head, this idea turned a plain shed into quite the little backyard feature that just draws your eye right in!

So if you too have a plain garden shed that could use a little prettying up, here's one fast and easy way...

I happened to have some reclaimed wood planks already painted black. Perfect!

However any planks would do.

About the stencil

The planks were arranged in a vertical format, then a large vertical Garden Shed stencil along with a rusty rake head were used to determine how long to cut the planks.

This stencil makes this one fast and easy garden sign!

How to stencil rustic letters

The letters were stenciled in various tones layered on top of each other, along with flicked paint to create added texture.

How to stencil:

  1. load stencil brush with paint
  2. dry most paint off with a rag until the brush feels dry
  3. tap or swirl paint through the stencil to achieve the desired effect

With that pretty new sign, I couldn't leave the old flower bed edging!

The reclaimed wood was replaced, then painted out in Fusion's Coal Black.

And boy oh boy did the black make those plants POP! Wait until you see how it turned out!

The finished sign

With the sign and rusty-looking letters complete, it was screwed to the side of the shed, marrying the rusty garden art perfectly!

That rake really makes this garden sign sing, don't you think?!

The little rustic garden shed is looking mighty adorable, thanks to some reclaimed wood, paint and a little stenciling!

With of course, a piece of rusty junk as the cherry on top.

Think you'll try incorporating a little rusty junk sign into your own backyard this summer? How will you make yours?
