One of the most common reasons people give for not starting a garden is that they can’t afford it. They think about buying seeds or plants, soil amendments, tomato cages and all those tools they might need. Gardening certainly can be an expensive endeavor, but it doesn’t have to be. If you want to grow your own food without spending an arm and leg on supplies there are many gardening supplies you can get very cheaply or even for free. It takes some time to search out some of these alternative and it might take more advance planning, but if you want your garden to save you even more money give some of my suggestions a try and see how free gardening can be!

Mulch is an important part of the garden. It is also one you can get for free- either by calling local tree services for wood chips, gathering your neighbor's leaves or using grass clippings.
Bamboo can be very useful for supporting plants such as beans, cucumbers and tomatoes. Search your area, since many bamboo plots grow fast and get out of hand you can find a place where if you come cut it, you can take it for free.
Using your recyclables for your seed starting needs is much less expensive than buying pots. You can reuse nursery pots, or use yogurt cups, milk jugs or any other container to start your seeds in.

I garden in a Community Garden and we are always foraging for free soil, plants and mulch to add to the gardens. Last fall the city delivered huge loads of wood chip mulch for the general public and community garden to use. Unfortunately, because of lack of experience with such a product, some added it around tender plants and shortly they died a sudden death. So be aware some new mulches will heat and "sour" if they are now turned over and allowed to cool before applying to the garden. Scavenger beware.

Freecycle.org is a resource for free items, tho it may take some time for someone to see your wanted posts or post an offer that applies to your needs.
