How to Make a Simple Trellis From Bamboo

This year I bought a Mandevilla plant. I didn’t know anything about them and soon discovered that this plant needed a trellis to climb on. Now I’m calling this a trellis but it may be more of a obelisk.

First, I tried some shorter bamboo and was generally unhappy with how it looked.

I went to the internet and found inspiration. I went back and bought a six pack of 6 ft long bamboo stakes.

I spray painted them black.

You’ll need to roll them as they dry to get all the sides

All done and ready to go.

I used black electrical tape to secure the top. Some bamboo will be easiest to finish painting when it is in place. So before I added the vines, I did my touch up painting. Can you see the dragonfly at the top? As soon as I put them in, it kept perching at the top. Here’s your fun fact for today… Did you know that dragonflies eat hundreds of mosquitoes a day? Every time I see one, I say, “Eat up! It’s an all you can eat buffet here!”

Now, it is time to wind the vines onto the supports.

I’m very happy with my super simple trellis. I might need to add more but for now it’s great.

Once a vine touches a means of support like my bamboo, it will wrap itself around and climb upwards.

Do you have a Mandevilla? What does yours climb on?

I’m debating about adding some cross rings to the sides. What do you think? Keep it simple or go for it?

Just a quick video on the whole process.

I found a fence finial in my garage and painted it black. Should I add it to the top?

I just can’t decide but I think I like it without.

What is your opinion? I think I’m going to leave the finial off until it fills in and reaches the top. Right now it looks too chunky at the top of the thin supports.

Here it is a month later.

Highly recommend and I would do it again.

It’s perfect. Just what I hoped it would look like.

Latest update pictures.

This is two months later.
