We were doing a garden show and wanted to incorporate rakes into our assortment of garden themed products. I love using recycled products to make my rake people unique.
Meet Mildred and Midge! When I spray the rake, I like to use bright colors so they stand out.
This is Chanel and Henri! Chanel’s body is the bottom part of a toilet plunger. I drilled from the bottom to stabalize her so she wouldn’t fall down. Henri, being French, is wearing an ascot! His eyebrows and mustache is made from an old ski rope spray-painted black.
Now let’s get to the nitty gritty of how I made each section of the face. This can be done using a variety of things. Let your imagination run!
For the mouth, I used old nail spikes and big washers. I attached all of this using wire.
The nose is a big spoon, they can be either metal and wood. I found mini gravy boats at a 2nd hand store and had no idea what to do with them at the time. Well, inspiration hit and I took the handle and bent it and wired it for the nose.
The eyes are a little more complicated. I like them to be 3 dimensional, so there is a lot of layering. I start with mason jar lids and rings. I drill through all the pieces and attach them with machine screws and bolts and wire. I use E600 to attach the “earring” pupils into place. The eyelashes are the top of a kippers tin that are cut thin to look like eyelashes.
The earrings are made from a torn apart steamer and acrylic gems that I ordered off of Amazon.
The “arms” are made with various things too. The yellow rake is tongs bent around the dowel and secured with a screw and wire. Midge’s Body is made from a recycled plastic bottle and spray painted. I stuffed the garden gloves with Christmas snow from the Dollar Store and secured them to the arms ( the bendable stem from a very large sunflower) with rubber bands.

*I said it takes 2 days because the E6000 needs dry time.
