When I added borders I went with used brick to tie everything together to look intentional instead of introducing yet another material. My house and yard are small, wanted a cohesive look. Also consider if you want it to stick up or be flat. If it's flat you can mow right over it, but if not, you'll have to edge it on a regular basis.
