Can I cover up exposed roots with dirt, on a 25 year old maple tree.

My neighbor said, covering the ground level roots with dirt will kill the tree😏

I don't know why not. Roots from trees on the soil is caused by shallow watering when it's young
To know for sure... consult with an Arborist or tree specialist... if there is a agricultural department at the local university or collage ask them... I have heard that with some trees... the roots rise to the surface in time of drought.
