Can you suggest a plant or bush for this area?

I recently had to "rehome" a dogwood in the middle of a stone-walled flower bed. It was growing like crazy and even with pruning back it was blocking the sun to the plants underneath. I would ideally like something that grows to 2 ft round and stays put! I don't want it to bush out more than 3 feet or so so the surrounding plants can see the light of day again. It does not have to flower. The bed is right in front of our home and a focal point of the landscaping. The bed gets a lot of sun. Any ideas for a plant, bush?

That's a very small amount of space for most shrubs I can think of. Perhaps Ilex glabra "Compacta"? Possibly you could keep Viburnum carlesii "Compactum" to 3 x 3 feet. It doesn't grow that fast and has gloriously fragrant blooms in spring. You don't say what zone you're in but I suspect either of those would be OK.

Dwarf Fothergilla; blooms in June but known for its fall color.

We are in Southwestern Ontario and I don't know our zone. Sad but true. I have added a picture of the area.

Need a filler for the middle.

I am not sure of your zone, but how about a slow growing dwarf conifer like Picea orientalis "Tom Thumb" or Picea mariana "Nana"?

A quickie fix might be caladium bulbs and elephant ear bulbs if these can grow in your area. Gives a nice tropical look. Use the space in winter (while they are dormant) for a Christmas tree.

A dwarf pieris, like "Bisbee Dwarf," "Bonsai," Pygmaea" or "Nocturne," would probably never get tall enough to cause a problem with your window.

These are great suggestions. I am going to jot the names down and go to our garden centre. I do not know if these are commonly found for sale in our area but I will check. I was at a small garden centre yesterday and the pickings were slim. They had a dwarf burning bush and a Forsythia, but both of those are going to be way too big for that area are they not?

@Julie Carr Yes, even dwarf burning bush will get 6 feet high, and forsythia is really not an attractive shrub aside from the brief period it is in bloom.

I'd do peonies in the background and an large group of annuals in front of that...that each year you just trade out for something different. but each year the peonies would bloom around late spring/early summer. and the annuals bloom all summer long
