Have you thought about some large pots with evergreen shrubs, and then smaller ones with brightly colored annuals. Red and yellows really pop!

Aretha, can you afford to have the awning replaced with a constructed canopy supported by posts? It would look so much more important if the canopy could come out to the front edge of where the gravel stops, and the posts support it there. You could run a railing (like on a porch) back to the house from there. It looks like this is where you mostly come and go from -- judging by the mailbox location -- anyway, so this would make it more welcoming. And like the others said, yes, place to large planters next to the door on either side, then medium-sized planters out from those with colorful plantings. Continue as you can afford to with filling in the graveled area with something hardy for your area. You could even paint the storm door one of the colors from the plantings -- a deep green if you are not terribly bold :-) -- and don't forget a nice doormat. Also, you can buy something to add to a little bottle that you screw into your garden hose and spray down your siding to wash it. That helps brighten your siding immensely. Good luck!

Oh, Aretha, that was nothing, haha! I am a retired interior decorator, so you don't want to get me started! But seriously, you have a blank canvas and that is the best kind. You can do alot -- it's just like everything else in life -- a matter of money. Bummer, huh!

Hi, I would put some small bushes( if there is dirt under the gravel)!also I would get some colorful flower pots ( check the goodwill and clearance section at stores they don't have to be expensive) and put some flowers outs to brighten up the area. I would also put some flower boxes outside the windows !

Raised garden boxes at different heights. Pick your meal or flowers when you walk in the door.
