Spend the money! Or face pulling and replacing your pump when it clogs (and burns out from overheating).

Absolutely! It will save cleaning, repairing and replacing your pump.

I use a black 5 gallon bucket and lid I purchased from Home Depot. I drilled two rows of 1 inch holes in the upper portion of the bucket and a larger one about 3 inches from the bottom for the hose to attach to the pump. Put a layer or lava rocks (bag from the garden center at Lowes) on the bottom of the bucket. Position the pump on top of rock, with the output sticking out of the lower hole and secure to hose. Fill around the pump intake with lava rock. If this is too big for your pond, I have used a black dish pan and lava rock.

Either a vault or install a skimmer which works really well since it also filters the water. I've been building in servicing ponds for 24 seasons now

Thanks everyone- that certainly answers my question !!

If you install a skimmer it will cut back on your cleaning. A skimmer pulls the surface debris into a basket. This way you do not need to clean the bottom so much. A vault will help you keep it clean. Our company has been building ponds since 1987.
