Dog poddy run

Doing a dog poddy area. It had a plastic over dirt and then larger rock covering it . Yesterday I removed the plastic because it did not drain, and smelled. Raked our the dirt and rock.
My next question is.. should I add a layer of limestone before the new breathable landscape sheet, and then pebble stone that is easy on their feet and good drainage?
**Photo is right before I pulled up the plastic.

The lime will help neutralize odors

Should have put down Porous Membrane instead.

I didn't put the plastic sheet down, the previous owners of the home did. I would never have used this plastic garbage ever. It's all over my yard under landscape and it pools up water every rain.

**Now if someone that can answer the limestone question could that would be great.

Yes. a layer of limestone will compact the area, so should be great. Then the breathable membrane (don't forget to peg it down securely) and then the pebbles. Sorry if you took offence, none was intended. We are just wanting to help..............

The boys & I will be thankful for that!

Good to know. It already helped getting that plastic out of there. Can't wait to start on the rest.

yes, lime is a great idea, but please only use PEA GRAVEL...it's not only easy to clean up poop, but hoses off perfectly ! My entire backyard is pea gravel and I did not put ANY weed barrier down...it's been pea gravel for over 30 years ! With only 2 fill ins.

Thank you. Pea gravel is definitely what I'm looking at as its the perfect size for feet and what I'm looking to do.

I'm still going to put down a breathable weed barrier for this area. While talking with the locals about the lime, it's best to keep the rocks separate and for cleanup. I can still pick up poo & for it being such a small area occasionally do a natural treatment for smell. We did decide since they only poo half way down and never closer....we are going to put in a fake grass on that half for a foot wipe.

  • Yes the lime will help a lot! I used a "tumbled" pea gravel to take the sharp edges off so if it gets stuck in their paws it won't cut them. Good luck! Your dogs are beautiful and have great names!

    • This is my yard this morning. Letting the grass go as I am going to redo the lawn in a few weeks. Gate is typically open, but I am heading out on errands and want them contained. Next door neighbors are at work. The dogs have the run of both yards and houses - their yard is roughly the same size as mine.
