Questions about Front entrance design info

I am getting ready to design the front entrance grass (weeds) area. We had a tree company cut down a tree type bush that was growing to close to the walkway. They left about a half inch of stump, and the rest is weeds. I want to finally plant flowers in the ground as apposed to putting out potted flowers. I purchased weed fabric and was told to lay this fabric over the ground and cut slits in the fabric and plant the flowers in the slots and then cover fabric with mulch. Arrange how I want it to look and minimal weeds would sprout where flowers are planted. Just pull weeds as needed. I have a 4'x12' area, I have enough fabric but, how many bags of much would this use? Also does this fabric interfere with the growth of the annual/ perennial flowers I'm planting?

One bag of mulch at two inches deep will cover 18 sq feet. The fabric will not interfere with the growth of the plants.

If your planting something that spread out or mounding like some varieties of hosta i would cut an X in the fabric instead of a slot. The first time I tried it the slot seemed to somewhat restrictive. I agree with Janet's suggestion of 2". Its a good depth!

Kill weeds with natural weed killer so you can plant right away. I would drill holes in stump and du p a good amount of salt to kill it and over time it will be out of your way. Place a good amount of potting soil then fabric down. Fabric will not bother your plants. Mulch as stated and every year you add more since it does break down. Water often at first so that plants get enough to establish great roots.

Add potting soil okay. The salting of the stump wow, who knew? Add more mulch every year. Does the fabric break down as well? Appreciate your help thank you.

For a stump its Epsom salts to deteriorate, but it could interfere with other plants, so plastic bag it around stump.
