I love hydrangeas as well! Unfortunately they prefer plenty of room for their roots to grow which is tough to achieve in clay soil. You can try amending your soil with a good compost or peat moss.
This is a very interesting sire. www.apinchofjoy.com/2013/05/five-tips-for-planting-hydrangeas/
Make sure that you only plant hydrangeas that bloom on new wood....Annabelle is quite hardy and amend your soul with lots of peat moss and loam. I even added old grass clippings to my soil for a couple of years and replaced a lot of the clay with new top soil. Hydrangeas don't like a lot of direct sunlight so find a spot that gets more shade. Good luck!
Hydrangeas require acid soil. You can plant in a container with soil from your LOCAL GARDEN CENTER not the big box stores. Be sure you check the acid content and you will need to fertilize with a special fertilizer. I live in an area of alkaline soil so have one acid loving plant in a pot...for about 12 years. TLC can do it.
