I have a chain link fence that needs energizing. I would like to give it a funky design but I do not want to spend a lot of money.

I'll leave the funky factor to your inspiration, but you can greatly and inexpensively improve the look of chain link with bamboo, as Hometalk member @Barb Rosen shows you in this post: http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/diy-beautify-a-chain-link-fence-with-bamboo-1948723

You could do something like this: embroidered "lace" with "thin" nylon rope, or even use the chain link as cross stitch graph.. really lots of options and pattern up to you.... http://www.pinterest.com/pin/52495151877073587/

I was thinking of something like that! Maybe weaving lawn chair nylon seat material. I think we're on the right track! Does anyone have epics of something like this??

they make pvc flat slats you can weave into the chain link that you could decorate - I really like Cynthia's idea of lace and Douglas's of bambo. They also make privacy tarp like screening you can zip tie to the fence and you could put a design on that before you install it that could be cool. I think it could be really cool to weave sticks through the holes and you could make designs out of different woods installed in patterns.

Grow some beautiful climbing plants up it otherwise some of the ideas already mentioned here are good too. We have chain link and are growing potato vine and pandorea and are thinking also about Hardenbergia also known as happy wanderer that has pea like flowers on it - comes in white or purple. There are lots of climbers you could try to soften the effect of the fence. Clematis is another that springs to mind but there are many, many more.

Thanks for the answers, but I'm still hoping for more ideas. I think I would like to remove the chain link and replace it with a fabric, nylon or rope weave... Like those old nylon weave patio seats... Anybody ever do something like that?

@Duncan Sproule No but it could work- just have to figure a way to keep correct tension on the ropes as you are weaving-- fence is for privacy/decoration and not to contain dogs is it?

@Duncan Sproule Also if you can find some cheap or free pallets you could use them as fence panels and planters that would give needed privacy

Hi, painting a chain link fence can dramatically alter the appearance of the fence.Coat of paint may be in order to keep your yard looking good. A paint roller makes the best tool for painting chain-link installations. Chain link fences are highly effective yard boundaries. They are a great option for security conscious property owners. Despite its effectiveness, the dull gray metal does absolutely nothing for your property’s curb appeal. A simple way to add some beauty to that drab gray fence is by simply covering the fence with annual or perennial climbers.Keep in touch with those incredible ideas.
