How can I update my outdoor landscaping?

What about a large paver area for a fire pit, patio table, chairs etc.? You can always place potted plants at the edge of the paver areas, for flowers, herbs, etc.

I used low maintenance roses and hibiscus. Pretty in spring to fall and little work other than mulch and water.

I like Oliva's ideas. I would plant annuals in pots and still put in some perennials that will be good for your area in PA. The hibiscus DEL suggested would have to be in a pot and brought in for the winter unless you can find hardy hibiscus, but they are wonderful plants, I have seven pots with hibiscus and they winter in my backroom/library with a south window and grow lights. Love them! You can start small and just spend a little time each weekend expanding your area if you use pavers. Get the kids on it, too, it won't kill them to help a little bit, even if it is playing fetch for tools, drinks, whatever. My kids have always helped with outside things, even my grand daughters can't wait for me to pick veggies so that they can eat them right out of the garden. Kids love to play in dirt! They may not mind helping!

I love knockout roses and catmint, they look so pretty together and require almost no maintenance. I use Preen in my flower beds to prevent the need for constant weeding.
