You have to separate the hummingbird feeder from the seed feeders. Hummingbirds will generally not like to feed with other birds. Doesn't have to be much, just enough that they feel safe. I have 3 hung outside my bedroom window and one on the front porch by itself for the new and very timid birds. Seed feeders on other side of yard.
You need to have plants that attract hummingbirds to get them in your yard. Cipher,Salvias,Lantanas,Coneflowers are just a few.
My hummingbird feeder and regular seed feeder are only about 8 to 10 feet apart and they hummers are there all the time. There are two factors that really play into hummingbird feeders. The water HAS to be fresh, and you need bright colors (flowers work great) around your feeder to get them started. After they start coming, they will continue to keep coming if the water is kept fresh. You can make your own water, and keep it refrigerated and only use a little bit (or what they will eat) at a time. You DO NOT need to add red color to it. As a matter of fact it is not actually good for them. If it is in your frig for more than approximately 2-3 weeks it will start to get bad as well, (you'll see that it will start getting unclear at the bottom). When you put water in the feeder, the hotter it is outside the faster it spoils. After 5 days to a week it is probably bad. Once you have them one year, they will be back the following year. Just watch on line when to expect them in your area, and get your feeder out. :)
