Know the plants that will do well in your area and your soil. Check out sites like Better Homes and Gardens for all the garden plans that they have and go from there. Check out a greenhouse in your area in the spring and you can pick their brains a bit for ideas. Before you decide on your plants, graph out the area to scale so that when you decide on a few plants you can plot them out with the mature size so that you can plan out what goes where, how many of whatever you want and how to place them so they are good by size so nothing small or short ends up too hidden when the bigger ones are mature.
Talk to a local nursery. They know what grows well in your area and will give you help at no cost. Be sure to buy from in the future.
your state website should list the Extension office , or a horticulturist in your area. They can give you lists of shrubs, flowers etc that are viable in your area
You can consult your local garden extension-they're usually quite helpful https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/detail/il/technical/?cid=nrcs141p2_030711
check the PH and acidity test first then theres no problem at all as the garden center will then give you a choice of flowers or herbs to plant eric
