Use rock, bark or more pavers to make a patio to fill in areas where grass doesn't grow reliably. Pull out patchy grass. Lay out fabric barrier, sand and then your choice of rock or pavers. Bark can be used without sand.

Just don't let bark "teepee" around the trunk. Bark should be pulled back from trunks for the health of the tree!

Google that tree to see if it puts out chemicals that grass does not like. The area over roots is also affected. Check for suggested plants and bushes. You may get away with dumping fill dirt over area to make flower beds. The area like a circle around tree: I can see a bench seat around that. Could be used for potted plants. Smooth dirt over area further away from tree and try some more grass. Put bag of seed in fridge overnight. Best time to plant will be early spring especially if rain is in forecast. Add some more dirt to keep birds out if possible.

There are plants called stepables and they look really interesting. I'm planning to try some this summer. There are ones for foot traffic, kids and dogs, shade loving, sun loving, drought tolerant, etc. Check them out, they just may be the answer you're looking for.

Also, zoysia grass will grow just about anywhere. We lived in the woods at one time and had a very sandy soil. Zoysia grass grew on the lawn and just kept going into the woods around our house. Zoysia grass is really a weed that can be very invasive unless you control it, but it will work in the spot you have. If you have flower gardens, be sure to put in a deep border because the roots travel under ground.

Need shade tolerant grass seeds. The category of fine leaved grass defined as fine fescue. Creeping Red, Chewings, and Hard Fescue are the most commonly planted fine fescue grass seed.

Fine Fescues are unique among lawn grasses. They have the finest leaves, the most shade tolerance and the lowest fertilizer and moisture requirements of all cool seasons (Northern) turfgrasses. In addition they germinate more rapidly. Zoysia won't work it is only full sun-semi shade tolerant. In many cases, the type of seed is less to blame for your bleak lawn than how you care for it.The way you water your lawn can make or break its ability to thrive. Focus on deep soakings rather than the quick spritz your sprinkler system may be giving it.Mow as infrequently and as tall as possible, and minimize foot traffic to encourage growth. Periodic overseeding also can help maintain the appearance of lush turf. And, of course, fertilization and weed control are both crucial. The right fertilizing treatment will bolster your turf’s health and allow it to fight off pests and weeds.Spring — the time to plant your lawn — will be here before you know it. Here's link to get best shade tolerant grass seeds it's called "Mid-America Super Shade seed" http://www.bluegrasses.com/info/midamericashade.html Then you could always put down astro turf

What kind of tree is that? If it happens to be a black walnut then that is your problem.

Plant lambs ear. It will grow and spread easily. Better and cheaper than mulch
