How do I plant a tree? What do I need for the hole?

  • Dig a hole 2 times the width of the root ball. The depth should be level with the root ball. Remove the burlap and fill in the hole tamping down the soil. Water it and you may need to stake the trunk, depending how how large your tree is.

Hello Judy! The link below will take you to a website that will give you the information you need. Click on “planting your tree” and then on the applicable root system that is comparable to your tree:

I always get a fish fresh caught and put in the hole before the tree and when done planting leave the shovel poked in the ground at the edge of the hole. Old farmer told me if the shovel stays standing the tree will flurish. Works for me.

If you decide to use the fish idea, make sure it is deep enough to deter the cats. I put home compost in the hole before planting and then make sure it is watered frequently and not allowed to dry out. The first year the tree is making a good root system and after that you will see more growth. Be sure to stake the tree. I use the leg of panty hose to tie it up. It stretches and gives the tree room for growth.

You can plant as suggested above and add a perforated pipe -- the type for drainage -- from an inch above ground level to wrap loosely around the rootball. Backfill and stake allowing the trunk to flex as it grows. Water the tree directly into the pipe so you know water is getting to the roots. You can get caps for these pipes so debris doesn't block it over time.

Be sure to check, loosen and finally remove both tie and stake when the tree doesn't need it - *before* it rubs/grows round it
