How do my husband and sons redo our pool to make it smaller

our pool is 40' x 35', 9' at deep end and 4' at shallow has a attached Jacuzzi the pool needs resurfacing but I hesitate to do it because I would like to have a back yard and pool not a huge pool that encompasses the whole yard, but something like 15' x 30' 6' deep end and 3' shallow. any suggestions? btw my husband is an engineer so it's something he could do but he's not good at design.
