I'm assuming you have trees, just leave tree duff and add more mulch. Animals are tough of lawns.
Use Artificial Grass, Stays Green and can be Hosed down.
Even shade grasses need some sun to grow.

Another option would be to mulch the entire area and add in stepping stones and plant shade loving plants like hostas.
I have durable ground covers growing (hostas, packasandra, ) with stepping stone path. I have mulch around some areas. - the dog walks on them and they are fine .
