There are good tutorials at websites of This Old House, Better Homes & Gardens, and Rain Garden Network. Basically, choose your spot, good especially if you already have a slope, dig the garden shape you want, perhaps varying depth, place a pipe from your downspout, plant your plants according to their preference...those that like to be really wet at the deepest part, those that like just damp further out, etc. I plan on using ferns, astilbe, globe flower, button bush, iris, swamp azalea, etc. But you might need some different plants in California. I also plan to use some river rock so it doesn't become a big mudhole.
