Can I have more info? Is it wooden? Metal? Other materials?
Sand it down, clean, repaint with a outdoor safe paint, and seal with a safe outdoor sealer for birds. Remember birds.Check all labels before attempted this.
I was thinking of using a stain.
Sand it, paint it, if you want, then use a sealant. For a chem-free refinish you could sand it, then seal it with beeswax & oil.

Since it is wood sand and stain, use a marine polyurethane.

Hi Dennis: You can use acrylic paint, but don't paint the insides, and if there's a perch, remove it. It only serves to give predators a place to stand while trying to get to the babies.
Hi Dennis! I think any latex paint would be safe to use on a bird house or bird feeder. Just make sure it's completely dry before using it. Just avoid lead-based paints.
