Your tomatoes get spaced 2 feet apart. Look up companion planting....carrots do well planted with tomatoes. There are other plants that play nicely with tomatoes

I grow parsley, chives, green onions, onions, leeks, garlic, basil, sage, marigolds around the tomato plants. I have grown sweet red bell peppers with no ill effects close by, but in an 8 x 8 plot I would skip it.
Just a bit of tomato trivia, the plant is related to the tobacco plants. At one time it was thought eating a tomato could kill you. Have you read Snow White? She of the poisoned apple? Modern scholars now believe the love Apple was actually a tomato.
I love this site https://www.rodalesorganiclife.com/garden/26-plants-you-should-always-grow-side-by-side It will tell you what plants to grow next to each other for maximum success. I don't know if its just me, or if others have this issue, but I have learned with tomatoes, do not park them really close to each other. I ended up with a mass of tomatoes that is difficult to pick from because they get so big and spread out so much. It was like a tomato vine wall, they way overgrew their cages and we make cages out of hog fencing, so they are not little flimsy cages!
I heard that one way is to alternate above ground and below ground plants. The only thing you can't grown near tomatoes, I read, is MINT. Mint roots will take over everything near it.
Thank you so much!
A boarder of Fr. Marigolds will keep the bug-things away. Basil is a good companion plant. Tomatoes can be staked, entwined on heavy twine that you suspend from a plastic pipe frame or set in tomato plant holders.
