Annuals or perennials and what is your location and hardiness zone?
Hostas of all kinds!
I too have a shade garden backing on to woodland and a creek. Here is a Youtube video I made of my garden... https://youtu.be/LGYfGV9w6Mg
My favourite shade loving plants are Moon Maple trees (in pots), Hydrangea bushes (and climbing Hydrangea), Hostas, and annual flowers such as Begonias and Impatiens for a blast of colour. Where I do get some sun at the edges of the garden I take advantage of with annuals that do like sun, such as Geraniums and Petunias.
Lots of different types of Hostas! From tiny Mouse ears to Sum and Substance. Next is impatiens, Astilbes. foam flowers. My favorite was Ligliaria. Huge green leaves with purple undersides. Bishop's weed, Ajuga, box wood (I shaped mine into a giant rooster) . We moved and am in the hot sun, now.
Be wary of bishop's weed, it can be invasive. Sweet woodruff makes a lovely edging plant. Dragon wing begonias are long lasting for pots. some azaleas will take shade, ginger is a good ground cover. I likecastilbe because it comes in many colors.
Creeping Jenny is pretty and you can walk on it. It takes sun or shade and has a yellow flower in the spring. Totally flat. Creeps everywhere.
