Why do you want to use sand? What purpose did you have in mind? Follow the manufactures guide lines about how to set up your fire pit.
Lava rocks from Lowes or Home Depot.
We always use sand in the bottom. It helps protect it and is easy to clean. Never had any problems with it.
Sand was recommended with my firepit so the hot wood and ash would not burn out bottom of metal pan!
