You could also contact your local extension office and they can tell you what grows best in your specific area.
Your "growing zone" is 7b to 8a. Research the type of things you want to grow (flowers, veggies, etc.) for those growing zones!

We used to live in the red dirt (clay) zones too and you would be surprised what will actually grow in that stuff! Flowers like Black-eyed Susan will grow great, but we found putting our tomatoes and other veggies in containers where we could mix the soil ourselves. Also, if you invest in a rotor tiller - it will help break up the soil.
