My backyard is all concrete. How do I make it look appealing?

Use a outdoor bright colored carpet, or stain the concrete, if you do not already have one a dining table and chair set, potted plants around the area, garden statues, solar lights for night time

Look into staining part of it, even green for a kind of faux grass patio. (Use your garden hose and chalk to outline a soft, graceful edge). If you make it large enough you can find a very reasonably priced outdoor rug to picnic on.

Stain may be a bit more work than paint, but it doesn’t peel.

Get some potted shrubs that are not fast growers. Buy some inexpensive “window boxes” without the hooks and plant annuals and herbs. If you have an old washtub fill it with plants. If you’re feeling particularly energetic, you can make some raised bed gardens (see Pinterest for dozens of ideas and instructions).

What you need are color and softness. Patio blocks are nice, but can be a tripping hazard unless you do the whole space, except you’re back where you started looking for softness.

Use large pots of plants and trees. In the winter the pots can be covered with quilts and plastic so the roots don't freeze. Good luck.
