I did tiers. Stagger them, depending on your total square foitage, but three is generally good to start with. In decorating, off numbers are good to use (3, 5, 7, etc.). Edge the tiers with rocks, which add texture, interest, depth and safety. They help with drainage. Hit up your local Home Depot, Chase Pitkin, or Lowe's for SOU advice how to install these. Good luck!

Look at terracing an area to create a level space....look for large rocks or railway ties or reclaimed bricks to act as a retaining wall, backfill for stability...you could do more than one ‘level’, put stairs down the slope, edge the stairs/levels with gardens and or shrubs...do a search on the internet for sloping yard solutions to find something that suits your taste and budget

The deck and tier suggestions are great. I have a new house on a corner lot. Most of the lot is fairly flat except for the side yard that slopes down to the sidewalk. Our crushed rock (5/8"-) walkway from the patio to the side gate is tiered with landscaping retaining wall blocks (16" W by 12" D x 8" H). The 8" high blocks are an acceptable step height. You can raise a sloping area using the blocks to build up an area. Each block cost about $3.50, is very heavy, and the starter row has to be level (side to side and front to back). A poured concrete or treated wood wall is an option. I am also building a raised bed garden on the sloping section between walkway and grass. Each bed is 4' x 8' with a 2' wide walking space between the 3 beds. I used 3 different sizes of wood with a wide one at the lower end and a narrow one at the top and a medium size to connect top and bottom. All of these boards form a level base and I can add another row of wood on top of this level base if I need a deeper bed.
