My backyard is weeds and hard bad dusty dirt. What can I do?

I've hand picked weeds and raked and watered, after trying grass seed. Nothing! It's hopeless! My flowers died, my baby orange tree won't grow and the bugs are terrible. What can I do with little money?

where do you live? It sounds like you have worked hard to make your backyard enjoyable. For this year, you may want to try some containers or raised beds. That way you can enrich the dirt you put in them without it costing a lot, they will be much easier to weed and keep watered. lot

    Best wishes.

Have you thought of adding paths/areas with gravel ( garden cloth should go underneath to suppress weeds)ā€¦.Pavers are an alternative way to cover dirt....Concentrate in a flower bed at a time....JMO

Depends where you live but you need obtain compost and work it into your soul. I've got a small tiller and I try to flip garden over in Spring and Fall but may miss a yearwith getting older & bad back. Sounds like Kansas or Oklahoma. No growth, no clippings for compost! You can call your local nursery and they will add the right stuff and get it turned into that dirt with a tiller and make good soil out of dust!

Getting good soil is a process that may take years. You could hire someone to come and till and put good topsoil on your property and then new grass seed. Or you could do it in stages. Get some top soil and mulch and work on a small area at a time. Start a compost pile. Use pots filled with good potting soil to grow flowers and vegetables while you are working on the yard. You could also make a rock garden or water feature; you would not need good soil for that.
