Did you rotate your crops, what fertilizer was used and how much?
I would suggest finding a knowledgeable person at a local nursery. Take some of your dirt in with you so it can be analyzed and be able to tell them what kind of sun your garden gets, what you've added to the soil, and what plants you're trying to grow. Be specific - maybe you're trying to grow varieties that grew well in your California soil and weather conditions that don't do well in South Carolina, which has a lot of clay in the soil.
It could be a number of things, friend....soil, sunshine, temperatures, vegetable selection or critters. See if you don't find this informative: http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/plants/vegetables/gardening/hgic1256.html
If I were in your shoes, I'd get hold of your county Extension service for local, specialized advice. In Pitt County, that would be located at 403 Government Cir # 2, Greenville, NC 27834 (252) 902-1700
You could try gardening with above ground pots.
A few questions for you,as a former head employee of Home Depots garden department I am pretty sure you were not given the proper instructions for when and how to feed your plants. Please pardon my statement as these are temps that are hired for the season with no experience. Please explain the procedure that was used. What exact fertilizer and when was it applied? This is not a judgement ,trying to figure out what went wrong.
