Teeny Tiny Little Gnome Home & Garden!

by Sfg178760
I'm in the process of making tiny gnome home and garden!
The garden is already there in an old top of a birdbath that is just on the ground at the place we rent in VT. I think I need to clean the garden up. But shall I add more moss? And I am thinking about making a teeny tiny twig bench...what do you think? Or any other suggestions for the garden? ALSO...this is what I have so far on the Gnome Home. What do you think. I was just going to make it out of wood, but then decided to go twig and now I think the front looks a bit odd. What do you think if I add twigs around the window and door? Or should I just cover the whole front with twigs. If I do that...how do I make a door and window? I have 37 days to finish it all for the cutest most adorable little twin gnome nieces ever that are going to visit!
The not-done gnome home in the not-done gnome garden!
Close up of Gnome Home as is!

I love your little twig house. Did you make it?

You might leave it without a door, then a toad might move in. I like lots of moss in my fairy gardens but you can use low-growing ground covers too. I have clips about fairy gardens (here on Hometalk)

I would add a small amount of trim around the door and window....or maybe some rhinestones to make a sparkle!

I am making a fairy garden for my youngest grandaughters, and I think I will probably make a few more because it is so much fun! I hunt around a garage sales for little chachkas and the $ stores have wonderful little bags of pebbles and glass stones that would work. I love your idea of the bench, and you might also like the look of a little arbour or even a fence. I would do a little more with the front of the house. The idea of trim is a good one, but maybe something different than the twigs i.e. popsicle sticks or even grape fine which would be good for the door and an arbour. In terms of planting, moss looks wonderful to double for grass, and I have also incorporated some tiny sedum, hens and chickens, and some other drought resistant ground covers. I even found the tiniest little baby yew in my garden and it is now in with the fairies. Most importantly, have fun! Be careful though, you might get hooked like I did..

I think a piece of wood, door size, and glue or wire twine or small tiny twigs across or down would look super. Love to see your finished project
  • Vicky Hudson Williams Vicky Hudson Williams on Jul 05, 2013
I would cover the entire front with twigs, leaving only the space for door and window. I also think you should cut out the door, but outline them both with twigs.
  • Marcia Hron Marcia Hron on Jul 05, 2013
Love the little "paths" to the houses . . . sweet!

@My Gnome Little World I like your idea of the twig bench! Anything made out of small material! If you add moss you might find the stuff that is all dry already and has fallen out of trees (we get huge amounts out of our oak tree. So is the gnone home a block of wood? I love the top part of it without the block of wood...would it stay together? I'd love to see you remove that block if you can and then (or if not) with twigs build in the window and the door part with twigs. Just use twine maybe to make the door attach so It opens and closes? I think making a twig frame for door and window then filling in with twigs would work good enough to complete the door and window. Then if the block in the middle is covered with twigs will look all right. I agree there are pea gravels that are sooo cute! You might use something like that in place of the bigger stones....If you were to do that then you could make the bigger stones more like fences to a yard? Another friend of mine just went looking through her house for thing she could add to her fairy garden that she could turn an old metal cup into a little play house etc. Looked around her yard found old odd little rocks that looked like things, and twigs that already looked like other things.. Good luck and have fun...Kids imaginations go crazy so if kids are involved at all they might enjoy helping you figure it out!

How about looking for a little something for a birdbath.....or twig swing then fill in with a little more moss...
  • Gayle Valverde Gayle Valverde on Jul 05, 2013
You can make fencing out of Popsicle sticks & don't forget some Fairy Dust (glitter). A gnome or two might also look neat. Some small silk flowers popped in here & there could add color. :)

I made a miniature scene a few years ago by using a "barn" part of a nativity scene that I bought at a thrift store for 25 cents. I also found some of the itty bitty clay pots (quarter sized) at JoAnn's and set them around the barn with soil in them. The best part of my display was the miniature Hostas I found at many of the garden centers.

Oh and toothpicks! I can see tooth picks making small areas.... @My Gnome Little World
  • Barbara I Barbara I on Jul 05, 2013
I have bought small birdhouses and then I turned them into Fairy Houses. You could put your sticks on the outside of the birdhouse. You can find the birdhouses in different sizes and shapes, I have painted and staged them with moss and flowers.
  • Judith Lund Judith Lund on Jul 05, 2013
How about using some nut shells and colored pasta and I think more moss would be very nice
  • Irene Irene on Jul 05, 2013
I love your fairy house. I think it would be cute to make the door out of twigs and then on the back side put on twig going from corner to corner. Tie the door to the house with some twine and leave the door open. You could make a twig table and put something tiny like a coke bottle cap and put glue in it and then some tiny artificial flowers in it for a vase. One or two twig chairs and you would have a cute scene inside the house. I like the idea of a bench. If you look around in a nursery or H.D. or Lowes you can find cute little plants that only grow 3 or 4 inches tall that could double as bushes or maybe a tree. It could easily be trimmed to keep the shape you want. There are ground covers that bloom and are very short that would add interest.

@KMS Woodworks your stuff is amazing! Not sure I would be able to put that much into a small fairy garden! Also wondering @My Gnome Little World if you want this to last longer than one summer? My friend said she didn't expect hers to even make it beyond a month or so with her kids playing with it. I was thinking something that would last forever or at least a long time! She figures she will redo a fairy garden every year if her kids are in to it that time...odd for me...I make things and want them to last so I don't have to really do double the work! lol

Okay, do not give me a hard time for asking this question ... is this a serious/sincere inquiry? A legitimate request for guidance and opinions? Or, are any of you with me in thinking that this is a prank? The post is a joke, she is pulling our collective legs? I'm not buying it at all.
  • Tanya Peterson Felsheim Tanya Peterson Felsheim on Jul 06, 2013
Well I figure it was a good question whether a prank or not, might bring up some good discussions about the issue so all is not lost!
  • Sfg178760 Sfg178760 on Jul 06, 2013
Tamara??????? You're funny! And do tell me why you think I am pulling your legs? Because my tiny (4" tall) is so great that it does not need any suggestions on how to make it better??? T be honest, I think hearing and seeing a bit about gnome homes is a nice change than always helping peeps with what color should they put on their walls! o) Now, Tamara can you help me pick a color for the inside walls of my gnome home?
  • Judy Johnson Wilson Judy Johnson Wilson on Jul 06, 2013
Haha Tamara Goldstein, you made me laugh, ty for that. Some people take their gnome and or fairy house very seriously. Its the child inside us coming out into our gardens. Its always good to be young at heart, and this is one way to have adult fun. Plus you have to admit it adds "interest" to the garden.
  • Barb Rosen Barb Rosen on Jul 06, 2013
It might need a few fairies too, here's a post I did on making them from materials gathered in your yard, http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/garden/make-your-own-garden-fairies-540505
  • Tamara Tamara on Jul 07, 2013
Okay, I guess I am "odd" man out here. I honestly thought this was a prank post. So, people actually create homes for gnomes? I apologize, I had no idea. I won't elaborate as I have a tendency to be, shall we say, blunt? And, I don't want to offend. Suffice to say it isn't my cup of tea. I really did think it was humor.
  • Tanya Peterson Felsheim Tanya Peterson Felsheim on Jul 07, 2013
@Tamara Goldstein there is a whole new fun genre of making little fairy homes or gnome homes probably from a combination of Robin HOod and the hobit! hehe. Some very simple, some extremely elaborate ...have fun looking at this search site http://pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=fairy%20garden&rs=ac&len=4

Hey everyone! Rock on Fairy and Gnome Home Makers! o) This is my first...and who knows maybe my last...but I never knew my questions would produce so many great comments and a bit of controversy! o)
  • Keri Keri on Jul 08, 2013
My fairy garden keeps growing and growing. Moss is my favorite plant to utilize. I think you should definitely cover the front with twigs and maybe just cut out the door and window.or gluesome stones and cut the cut the cardboard out.
  • Sfg178760 Sfg178760 on Jul 08, 2013
Hi! To all those that have suggested cutting out the door OR getting rid of the block of wood! That will not happen! ;o) The block of wood was my inspiration and everything is glued to it! And cutting a door out of it is basically impossible as it is not even 2" by 1" in size! o) I started this project because of the birdbath on the ground above...it came like his on the side of our rented house! AND for my 8 year old twin nieces are coming for a visit! So, if it is not perfect in the eyes of REAL tiny home makers...I am okay with it as I know my nieces will love it in any form! BUT I think I will add tiny sticks around the windows and doors. I will add some moss to the roof as well. And I will be sure to add some moss around the gnome garden and probably a twig bench! And that is about it as I have other projects to do that will hopefully bring me money! o) See my Blog for such projects! http://ourownbigworld.wordpress.com/

I love your imagination with this! I am in the process of making my first fairy garden. I am having fun doing it. My hubby doesn't understand any of it...LOL he does not have an imaginative mind. Has never been able to see my ideas all done until they are. Then he says wow...I would never have thought of that. So I think we who make these genome or fairy gardens are special people. My 7 grandchildren love the way I think. We have so much fun sitting around the firepit telling stories. My granddaughter (only girl) is helping me from another state. When she comes to visit next mth we will add her little house & whatever else she has made
  • Tanya Peterson Felsheim Tanya Peterson Felsheim on Jul 09, 2013
Well sounds like there is no way to remove the block of wood @My Gnome Little World but I think if you really are gluing to it, you could glue more sticks to it, just use some little sticks to make a surround for a fake window and a fake door! But however it turns out can't wait to see it!

Someone suggested shells above...and just remembered I have tons! Last year we lived across the street from the beach in FL...thanks goodness I hoarded some! I think some shells into the garden or even for the pathway instead of the white rocks! This tiny gnome home lives in VT...not a very beachy place, but everyone loves the shell...right??? Speaking of this...I think I will go finish up the house! And work on the garden today too...but honestly I have to go sneaking and grab some great moss covering from spots around town to finish things up (no worries just a teeny bit that no one will miss ;o). May have to go on an after dark walk this eve! o) Shhhhhh! It has rained so much this summer...the moss ground cover is EVERY where...except in my yard! o)

Hey you guys! Look what I found at Michael's today for only .79!!! Me thinks it looks like a great base for ANOTHER gnome home! I will somehow cut the hole to be a doorway and then cover in moss??? Which I also bought today! Sticks again? Straw? Who knows. AND THIS IS HOW IT STARTS...
  • Brenda De Lair Brenda De Lair on Jul 11, 2013
Oh nooooo! You've got the bug lol. Your plan sounds great. You could cut off the perch and use some rocks as stairs at the bottom of the hole or even just bury the bottom of the bird house. Your gnome will have a sunken living room. Posh!
  • Tanya Peterson Felsheim Tanya Peterson Felsheim on Jul 11, 2013
@My Gnome Little World that is an awesome friends' house to your basic one! I love the twigs you using though so I might even glue to the sticks to the roof to give them the same effect!
  • Sfg178760 Sfg178760 on Jul 11, 2013
I just cut the door out...shhhh...don't tell my husband as I used one of our good knives. I will just suggest all our knives get sharpened! o) I will cover it with something for sure...I like the houses being made of bits and pieces from nature (not that the wood is not natural...but you know what I mean ;o).
