Hostas would look very nice in these areas. There are many varieties and sizes. Also some lilies like Stella D'Ora. Plant perennials--they will come up every year and look beautiful!
If it is shady, hostas are really great and seem to thrive on neglect once they are established.
Hostas are a definite, and I like boxwood, too. One can always get smaller boxwood plants and keep them trimmed to keep them shaped.
ornamental grass, by the porch, there are so many lovely grasses, maybe a good size boulder. Or if your in an area that Hydrangeas do well in, those would look great too.
I might put hostas and my favorite are phlox ( mountain pinks) they spread out and will fill the entire area they don't bloom long but they stay green after they are done blooming also a perennial
