My mosaic is not a smooth level surface and the poly that I used wore off and the sun turned the poly yellow.

Did you use an exterior polyurethane?

  It was actually a poly for molds. I thought it would work to put a thick plastic cover over my mosaic to protect it but walking on it wore it down. I don’t remember if it said indoor or outdoor. It sure turned yellow from the sun though and cracked badly.

try a marine grade varnish for outdoors

Well it sounds as if it was just for mould release? Suggest you ask at DIY outlet for their recommendation to be sure..........
