I recycled my old mulch and placed it in a less visible part of the yard and then went to town with the new. You can use new with the old but remember the color will be a bit different. Since it doesn't appear that you have a plantings here you might consider a weed barrier before you put down more or new.

Most people add mulch on top of the old as it deteriorates, no muss, no fuss. Make sure you pull any weeds first before you put on the new.

  • I just add new over old in Spring and fall if needed. If moldly, remove and replace.

Would putting mulch against the house attract insects? In areas that are troubled with carpenter ants or termites: mulch might be an invitation for them . "Welcome. Make yourself at home!"

@Connie, what a cute little area! If you can work the old mulch into the dirt a few inches, that would be helpful. As mulch decays, it is making soil. Yes, put more on top. You like red mulch. So does my husband. I see a chair and sand buckets. I just bet that's a favorite spot for you and your children to play outside. Bless you 😇

Sure but they will mix unless you put a layer of something like landscape cloth between. If you can find a good color mix you do not need the separator.

I have five grands, three who live in a different state, and they are now 13, 19, and 22. My little grand girls are getting bigger-6 and 8 and I have a few more days before school starts. I'm hoping to get two diff. days and one night with them. My big deal now is finding real adult crafts, but letting them do the work, even if it is messy and everything gets covered in glitter glue. You never know. This may be the last summer. I'm sure you treasure every day with your family, as I do. Bless you, Connie 😇

We put mulch around our house. Looked amazing... until the neighborhood cats used it as a giant litter box.

You don't have to, but do make sure you don't get too deep of a layer of mulch. You also want to "stir and fluff" the old mulch before putting the new mulch on top.
