We had heavy clay in the South and added a half ton of sand and several pickup loads of old hay and straw cleared out of a barn and corral for a 200 sq foot garden. After we spread it all with a shovel and pitchfork, we tilled it several times. Then we let it rest all winter and tilled it again in the spring. We had a bumper crop of raspberries, strawberries and vegetable garden.

Rototill top soil, compost and peat moss.
