What is the best way to break up Clay type soil?

I agree with Janet! Peat moss, lime, and compost.

Soil sulfur, applied and watered in every three or four months will help, but it'll take time.

I live in North Texas where you could make a sculpture with the soil. To naturalize my garden and plant beds, I've added peat and gypsum, sometimes sand as well. Clay is naturally nutrient-rich and often quite alkaline. Sulfur and peat will bring it more neutral, too.

Cedar mulch, lava sand (a little goes a long way). Check with the "Dirt Doctor" website and he will give you ratios, Never touch the soil when it is wet/damp. It makes stones forever.. I bet the pyramids were made with clay soil.
