What is the best way to landscape in a small shady area?
We have a small beach house with a very small front garden that has a beautiful very old live oak shading the garden & house. The trees roots are exposed and nothing we plant seems to grow in the area, not even grass. What are the best plants or features to highlight this area? The area is approximately 10 x 10 square.

I have a similar area and was able to get small hostas to grow in between the roots. They have grown large now and fill the area from spring to late fall.
