6-8 weeks before you last expected frost date

I would start them in Feb., in a egg carton, in the garage, or an safe area, that is luke warm. Then when this season comes, you will have a head start on the planting season. Best wishes, J.

I have never had luck trying to transplant lettuce and spinich, so I do NOT agree with Judy. First answer is excellent. Actually, I basically plant in the FALL when I rototill, then they come up when it is warm enough. Has worked well for years in Montana.
