Good luck!
Where are you? Rhododendrons and azaleas are beautiful but not good north of about Ohio or Pennsylvania or even if you are at the same latitude but on a higher elevation.
In Michigan there is a wonderful source of information for gardening - http://msue.anr.msu.edu
There is probably something similar in your location - try Googling something like "flowering bushes for shady areas in x (your location)".
Visit your local fancy nursery and ask questions. We have nurseries/garden centers like Bordine's - fabulous place with lots of people eager to help you.
In Michigan we also have Master Gardeners (back to http://msue.anr.msu.edu) - local people who volunteer to help people find the right plants for their spaces.
Have fun!
