What exactly do you want for planting? what is your lighting?
Look up your local native plant society. We have them all over Texas. They have meetings and they also set up sales for planting things that are native to your area. These plants can tolerate the heat and drought better than others and they come back every year. Crepe myrtle is an easy tree and you can get it in most any color. My favorite for sun is a Mexican petunia. Check out the Neil Sperry page. He's in your area and has great tips.
I'm in NW Texas. Irises grow well, trumpet vines too. My favourite bushes are Barometer bushes (a sage w/purple blossoms), Scottish broom, and roses do very well. Hollyhocks grow like crazy too. Good luck, hope you find this helpful.
