What's the best way to kill moss and keep your yard green?

We get so much rain 9 months out of the year that the lawn is 90% moss. Then it's drought for 3 months. What options do we have to get rid of the moss that has taken over without ending up with a dead yard for several months by killing off the moss until the grass can regrow. Or is that our only option?

Simply rake the yard thoroughly and with ample force to lift the moss away. Use a spring-tine rake. If you have a larger lawn, you can get a dethatching blade for your lawn mower. Set the height adjustment so that the tines can touch the surface of the soil, but if you set it too low, you will also remove your grass.

I had the same problem. tried a commercial moss killer - it came back!

Rather than fight it again due to my huge oak tree and shady yard, I decided to go with it. It took a while, but Now I have the most beautiful shady moss yard that never needs cutting.

I dunno, Neid2756. That dry climate in Texas may not be conducive to grow moss. I live in a hot, humid climate. And thank you - it's on it's way to being pretty.

Thanks for your suggestions. We may just go with it - actually my kids like it. They say it's softer then grass. But it just doesn't seem right to have a "moss yard". We have dogs & lots of wildlife and a large yard (2+ acres in all, a little less than 1/2 in grass, the rest is trees) & I just hate putting chemicals on it. We also have a pond & creek so I worry that the chemicals may get into the water. I don't know that my back would hold up to all the racking, and with all the rain & shade from the trees, I'm not sure it's a battle we could win. I welcome any other ideas.

    Thanks again.

Oregon is moss country. Every spring, I get a big bag of Lily Miller Moss Out granules (found these work the best) and spread it out over the moss. Then rake out a week or two later. Then spot treat with the liquid spray Moss Out until it disappears. Repeat next year.

Ours is the same. Keep feeding the lawn with lawn food, as the new grass grows it disperses the moss. I raked our for years then found out too late I was just spreading moss. This year we have fed regularly the lawn. The yellow moss is getting less.
