Trees block the sun as well as suck up a lot of water so it isn't uncommon to have a barren spot underneath them. I have put my yard clippings around the trees and also bought damaged bags of mulch when I find them and put that around them. Don't put the mulch right up against your tree as that will encourage bugs, leave a slight trough around the base of the tree and then mulch. I have used stones around the outside of the mulch to keep it in place and also to make it easier to mow and week wack around the tree. I pick up stones from the fields around me and also in my travels. Makes it interesting when the stones have some stories behind them.
