What to plant under black walnut trees.

I have 2 mature black walnut trees in my backyard with a bare area around them. I have bordered this with hosta plants. No other flowers seem to thrive in this area except some lily of the valley. I want it to be colorful with flowers, but not sure what is compatible with the black walnut as it exudes a kind of chemical from the roots.

Good luck with this. Walnut trees exude a poison to keep other plants from growing near them.
